Rassie Erasmus has all but confirmed Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s future is at flyhalf for the Springboks.

Speaking to Rapport in the buildup to the 2024 Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, Erasmus praised Feinberg-Mngomezulu, emphasising the depth the 22-year-old adds in the backline.

“I have my view on that and Tony Brown has very good plans,” Erasmus told Rapport. “I think Sacha can play 10, 12 and 15.

“I think we now have good depth at 10, 12 and 15. Someone like Lukhanyo Am, for example, settled in well against Portugal at 12 [after Andre Esterhuizen’s red card] with 14 players and after his long injury.

“I think Sacha’s best position is probably 10.”

The DHL Stormers playmaker has appeared in four Tests since his debut against Wales on 22 June. Despite being a substitute in all matches, his impact has been significant.

Erasmus highlighted Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s composure and leadership, considering him “captain material”.

“It’s just about how he takes the next step,” the Bok boss added. “About how we manage him and help him take the next step. So I think he has a bright future.”

Regarding selections at No 5 lock, No 8, and scrumhalf for the Brisbane clash this week, Erasmus is clear. With Jasper Wiese suspended and injuries to Cameron Hanekom, Elrigh Louw, and Kwagga Smith are the primary choices at No 8.

“We want to see Elrigh against big teams. He was always in our plans but had a slump,” said Erasmus.

For the No 5 lock, options include Pieter-Steph du Toit, RG Snyman, and Ruan Nortje, given the injuries to Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert. “Pieter-Steph can play five and call the lines. He transitioned from lock to flank successfully,” Erasmus explained.

At scrumhalf, with Faf de Klerk injured, Cobus Reinach’s experience makes him the front-runner, supported by Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg.
