Andre Esterhuizen lasted just two minutes against Portugal on Saturday before the centre was sent off, but was his tackle dangerous?

Esterhuizen was initially yellow-carded for a hit that left Portugal midfielder Jose Lima concussed, as the TMO deemed the Springbok had made head-on-head contact in the tackle.

The incident was referred for review to the TMO bunker and was subsequently upgraded to a red card, bringing Esterhuizen’s Test to a premature end.

The Springboks went on to win the Test 64-21, scoring 10 tries in the process.

The decision to red card Esterhuizen has been heavily debated by fans on social media, while former England prop Joe Marler said it was “ridiculous”.

On commentary during the match, and again in providing his analysis at half-time, Victor Matfield disagreed that there had been head-to-head contact.

What would have been the correct reaction to Andre Esterhuizen’s tackle?
