In what could be a game-changing move for Super Rugby Pacific, former Wallabies playmaker James O’Connor is in discussions with the Crusaders about continuing his career in New Zealand.
The potential trans-Tasman switch comes after the 34-year-old rejected a deal to stay in Queensland with the Reds, where he was largely relegated to a mentoring role due to injuries in 2024.
If the deal goes through, O’Connor could step straight into the Crusaders’ No 10 jersey, filling the gap left by Fergus Burke, who has signed with Saracens in England.
The Crusaders are still reeling from Richie Mo’unga’s move to Japan, making O’Connor’s potential arrival a critical boost for Rob Penney’s squad, who missed out on the Super Rugby playoffs last season.
Having played 63 Tests for Australia and over 120 Super Rugby matches across three clubs, including the Reds and Melbourne Rebels, O’Connor brings a wealth of knowledge that could benefit a Crusaders side in transition.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time O’Connor has been linked with a New Zealand club. Three years ago, discussions with the Chiefs about a possible move were shut down by Rugby Australia.
Now, having been holidaying in New Zealand – where his parents were born – O’Connor has been exploring new options, with the NZ Herald reporting ongoing talks between him and the Crusaders.
O’Connor’s trans-Tasman shift would be rare, but not unprecedented. Former Wallaby Digby Ioane had a short stint with the Crusaders in 2017. The Reds also benefitted from the signing of former All Blacks Alex Hodgman and Jeffery Toomaga-Allen last season, showcasing the value of cross-border recruitment.
