Having made a successful first Test start in Perth, Springbok lock Ruan Nortje says he is excited by the prospect of stepping into Franco Mostert’s shoes.
Nortje earned his second Test cap and first start for South Africa as the Springboks completed a successful start to their Rugby Championship campaign with a bonus-point win over the Wallabies in Perth.
The Vodacom Bulls captain started in the No 5 jersey, where he has predominantly played for his club, but has set his sights on doubling up as a blindside flank.
Nortje could start making more appearances in the back row for the Bulls, as he wants to add another arrow to his quiver, aiding his chances of being a Springbok regular.
Rassie Erasmus has made no secret of valuing versatile forwards, with Franco Mostert, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ben-Jason Dixon able to play in both the second row and back row.
“It’s good to play different positions,” Nortjé was quoted by Sunday newspaper Rapport.
“That’s how your game develops. I think it’s exciting to do something like that.”
The 26-year-old Nortje said that he has modelled his own game on Mostert, who has won plaudits for his massive work-rate off the ball.
“I consider myself a player who brings the same kind of game as Franco,” Nortje said. “He may not be the biggest lock, but he has a massive performance.
“Franco is someone I look up to. I naturally strive to play my own game and make a big contribution.”
