Victor Matfield says that while the Springboks may not sit atop the World Rugby rankings, they are, without question, the best team in the world.

Despite claiming the Rugby Championship title for the first time since 2019, the Springboks are currently ranked second in the world behind Ireland.

The world champions’ 11-month run at the top of the rankings ended after they suffered a defeat against Argentina in the penultimate round of the tournament in Santiago del Estero, with Ireland taking the number one spot.

Writing in a column for Sunday newspaper Rapport, Matfield said the Boks regardless are the best team in the world.

“From a team perspective, the Boks may not be No 1 in World Rugby’s ranking, but for me we are,” Matfield argued. “Rugby is about winning those big games and trophies, and we do that.

“We have won all the trophies and cups we play for in the past few years. In my opinion, we are by far the no. 1 team and I don’t think anyone can compete for that spot.

“Those in the northern hemisphere can say what they want, but the Webb Ellis Cup is here, the Springboks have won the most Tests this season and no other team has beaten the All Blacks four times in a row.”
