Lukhanyo Am is ready to provide a timely reminder of his qualities as he prepares for his first Test match for the Springboks since last August.

Am is among a contingent of World Cup winners that will make their first Test appearances of the year when the Springboks tackle Portugal for the first time in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The star of the 2019 World Cup campaign, Am missed the 2023 tournament due to a troublesome knee injury that flared up during a warm-up match in Argentina last August.

Now set to earn his 36th Test cap in a midfield combination with Andre Esterhuizen, Am is eager to show why he was regarded as one of the best in the world in his position and get back to his best for the Boks.

“The past 24 months for me have had their ups and downs, in terms of injuries,” Am said. “So I’m delighted to be back in the group and getting the opportunity to play again.

“I’m really excited and happy to get the call up, joining the boys in the training camp and catching up with the new gameplan that we want to play.

“It’s been ups and downs, but that’s part of the game. Injuries happen. It’s just about working and getting back to where you were. Being here is a good sign that I’ve tried my best. I just can’t wait to wear the green and gold jersey again.”

In Am’s absence, Jesse Kriel has gone on to snatch the No 13 jersey and showed his quality in helping the Springboks defend their world title in France.

Am welcomed the competition with Kriel, saying it has helped both maintain high standards and keep driving to improve themselves.

“The one thing we’ve managed to do really well in the squad, having healthy competition and depth and in the group,” Am said.

“It keeps you accountable on bringing your A-game all the time, making sure you do your prep correctly and being the best version of yourself, in training and on game day.

“So it’s really good for individuals and for the team.”
