Renzo Du Plessis scored a brace of tries as the Lions climbed to third spot on the 2024 Currie Cup standings after a hardfought bonus-point win over Griquas in Kimberley on Sunday.

Two first-half tries from flanker Du Plessis and a late score from scrumhalf Steyn halted a Griquas comeback to secure a 36-28 win.

Griquas were in the lead after the first quarter with tries from Zane Bester and Cameron Hufke cancelling out an early touchdown from Du Plessis.

Front row duo Jaco Visagie and Morgan Naude responded for the Lions with a try a piece before Du Plessis scored the bonus-point try at the half-hour mark, and the Lions went into the break leading 24-14.

Jarod Cairns scored the visitors’ fifth try of the match five minutes after the restart, but Griquas fought back in the third quarter.

Tries from Connor Mahoney and Tertius Kruger closed the gap to just one-point before Steyn’s second try settled the contest.

The Lions return to Ellis Park next week when they host the Pumas, while Griquas travel to Durban to battle the Sharks on Sunday.
