Pocket rocket Cheslin Kolbe hasn’t let his size stop him from becoming a two-time Springbok world champion and key player in Rassie Erasmus’ imaginative gameplans.
In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Kolbe reflected on his journey as one of the Boks’ most dynamic assets under Erasmus.
Despite his diminutive frame, the 38-Test Kolbe has thrived on Erasmus’ tactical creativity, which has seen him play across the back three, scrumhalf and even as a lineout thrower.
“I’m blessed with the skill set I have, but I work quite hard on it,” Kolbe shared. “With Coach Rassie, you never know what he might come up with.
“He’s always five, 10 steps ahead. He sees this game differently and isn’t scared to try new things.”

Kolbe’s agility and versatility have silenced critics of his size, and he embraces the opportunity to “prove people wrong”. “I’m not as big as other players,” he said. “You need coaches to believe in you and your skill set.
“That’s what excites me when I get to play – to prove people wrong and showcase the talent I’ve been blessed with.”
At 31, the former DHL Stormers, Toulouse and Toulon flyer feels equipped to contribute in the green and gold for years to come. As for personal accolades, Kolbe believes the team’s success is what matters most.
“To win World Player of the Year would be special,” he admitted. “But I’m not doing this to be an individual; I’m doing whatever it takes for the team to be better.
“Once the team is successful, individuals stand out. I just want to do that jersey proud and enjoy myself.”
