Eduan Keyter scored the winning try at the death as the Sharks XV sealed a late victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
Keyter’s 78th-minute try gave the Sharks XV a deserved 25-20 win after it appeared that the visitors were about to let an 18-10 half-time lead slip.
The victory sees JP Pietersen’s team climb into the Currie Cup’s top four and close the gap on the defending champions to just three log points.
A brace from Yaw Penxe – one of those an intercept try – and two Lionel Cronje penalties saw the Sharks XV go into the break eight points ahead.
The Cheetahs have had to come from behind in their last two games and it looked like they were going to do it again, as they produced an excellent response in the second half.
Hooker Vernon Paulo muscled his way over, before flyhalf Ethan Wentzel sprinted clear to score a superb try in the 74th minute as the Cheetahs went 20-18 up.
However, just when it seemed the Sharks had slipped up, Keyter stepped up, getting the ball from a lineout just outside the Cheetahs 22 and breaking a couple of tackles on his way to score the winning try.
Next up for the Sharks is a trip to Cape Town for a coastal derby against DHL Western Province, while the Cheetahs will host an in-form Lions team.
