A Philip-Albert van Niekerk penalty at the death clinched a maiden victory for the Junior Springboks against Argentina in their final U20 Rugby Championship clash on Sunday.

Van Niekerk split the uprights after the hooter as the South Africans clawed back from a 14-point first-half deficit to overcome Los Pumitas 30-28 at the Sunshine Coast Stadium in Queensland.

The flyhalf kicked 10 points in the match that included tries from centre Jurenzo Julius, prop Casper Badenhorst and skipper Zachary Porthen.

Julius dotted down in the opening minute to give Bafana Nhleko’s charges the ideal start as they went in search of their first win in the inaugural competition.

But four tries from Franco Rossetto and the boot of Facundo Rodriguez powered the Argentinians into the lead before Van Niekerk completed the fightback from the young men in green.

New Zealand and hosts Australia will lock horns in the closing encounter of the tournament later on Sunday.
