Ireland-based columnist Jonny Holland says Tony Brown has the chance to create “something special” with the Boks once his attack structure is embedded effectively.

Writing for RTE Sport, Holland highlights the influence of the Kiwi tactician on the world champion Springboks in their victory over Ireland at Loftus Versfeld last week.

He observes that the Boks, historically dangerous with possession, have already evolved under Brown, emphasising fast counter-attacks and aerial contests.

Holland notes South African rugby’s blend of pace, power, and technical skills, often showcased more at domestic level than internationally.

He explains how South Africa’s new approach against Ireland, demonstrated by more passes and balanced play from Damian de Allende, diverged from their traditional gainline battles.

While acknowledging some timing issues, Holland believes Brown’s tactics, combined with SA’s strong set piece, promise a formidable future if the attack continues to improve.

TEAM: Records fall for unchanged Boks

“The attacking structure of Tony Brown was written all over South Africa’s defeat of Ireland,” he writes. “While it wasn’t always perfect, the fact that South Africa are experimenting with some change in their attacking structures, while also winning top Test matches, shows just how far their game could go.

“Brown had his Japanese attack purring in the 2019 World Cup, when they beat Ireland. He now has the chance to create something really special because of the tools that he has at his disposal in South Africa.

“If South Africa’s attack struggles, they still have one of the most effective scrums and lineouts in the game, which will enable them to approach each game differently.

“They will be an unstoppable force if this attack structure is embedded effectively.”
