Ireland’s management are reported to be fuming over the clean-out that led to Craig Casey’s injury, as the tourists count the cost of a physical series opener against the Springboks.

Casey had to be stretchered off the field in the second half of the first Test at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night after being knocked out in a tackle from Springbok lock RG Snyman.

The incident was checked by TMO Ben Whitehouse but the decision was made that it did not fall into the realm of foul play.

According to RTE Sport, Ireland have been left unhappy with the decision not to punish Snyman, although there aren’t expected to be any citings from the first Test.

Andy Farrell confirmed after the match that Casey was up and walking around and the halfback took a photo with opposite number Faf de Klerk, but he is not expected to play in Saturday’s series decider in Durban.

Ireland have also suffered a major blow with hooker Dan Sheehan suffering a torn ACL, which is expected to rule him out for the rest of the year.

Sheehan suffered the injury in the first half, but played on until half-time after getting his knee strapped and was replaced by Ronan Kelleher after the break.

Ireland will call in South African-born Ulster hooker Rob Herring as a replacement.
