Griquas put seven tries past the Cheetahs to dent the defending champions’ hopes of securing a place in the Currie Cup playoffs in Kimberley on Friday.

Having taken a 17-10 lead into the break, Griquas claimed a 44-31 bonus-point victory in the opening match of the penultimate round of the Currie Cup.

A try after the hooter from Munier Hartzenberg saw the Cheetahs grab a late four-try bonus point, but the defending champions are now in a tight battle to secure a place in the playoffs.

Defeat in Kimberley means that the Cheetahs remain in fourth place with 25 points, trailing the Sharks XV by one point, but they are only one point ahead of the Pumas, who face a strengthened DHL Western Province side in Stellenbosch on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Griquas have leapfrogged WP into sixth place with 19 points, but conceding a late bonus point to the Cheetahs means they will be unable to qualify for the semi-finals.
