Tyrone Green says he hasn’t heard anything from Rassie Erasmus but will continue to push for a place with a talented Springbok team.
Since joining Harlequins from the Lions in 2020, Green has been one of the Premiership’s most consistently lethal attacking players.
The 26-year-old played an influential role in the ‘Quins’ Premiership title win in 2021 and has scored 25 tries in his 77 games during his time in London.
However, a call from Erasmus to join the world champion Springboks has thus far eluded Green, who will be eligible to play for England next July.
“No, nothing yet. I’m in the off-season now so haven’t been playing much, I haven’t heard anything,” he told Planet Rugby. “When the season starts again we’ll see how things go in terms of performance, and see what can happen from there.”
“That’s a bridge I’d have to cross when I get there,” he added on choosing between England and South Africa.
“But at the moment I’m putting all international things behind me and try to get more silverware at Harlequins. We had two good opportunities last year, and we let both slip. My mindset is purely on trying to get one trophy this season.”
The Springboks have no lack of depth among their outside backs, with Quan Horn and Edwill van der Merwe the latest additions to a contingent that includes Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Makazole Mapimpi, Canan Moodie and Aphelele Fassi.
“They’ve got a good team and they’ve got two World Cup wins and I need to do a lot to get into that team,” Green said.
“I just have to keep putting my head down and doing what I can do, and if we can get more trophies, more wins and better performances who knows what can happen.”
