Springbok and Vodacom Bulls centre Lionel Mapoe has announced his retirement from rugby, calling time on a professional career that spanned nearly two decades.
The 36-year-old is reportedly set to switch gears and step into the boxing ring, with rumours suggesting a potential bout against former teammate Elton Jantjies on 30 November.
Mapoe expressed gratitude for his time with the Bulls, highlighting the 2021 Currie Cup victory as a career highlight. “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the entire Bulls family for the incredible time I had during my years at the union,” Mapoe stated on social media.
“Winning the Currie Cup in 2021 was a special moment in my career, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing coaches, players, and staff I was fortunate to work alongside.”
The versatile Mapoe’s journey began with the Cheetahs in 2008, followed by significant stints with the Lions and Bulls. The 14-Test back’s talent earned him a Bok call-up in 2015, nearly securing a spot in the World Cup squad that year.
“The relationships I built during my time there will stay with me for a lifetime. I’m deeply grateful for everything the Bulls have done for me, both on and off the field,” Mapoe added.
