Fabien Galthie has confirmed flyhalf Matthieu Jalibert has declined the opportunity to represent Les Bleus in their blockbuster clash against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Jalibert, who came off the bench in France’s emphatic 52-12 win over Japan, reportedly anticipated starting against New Zealand. However, Galthie opted to retain Thomas Ramos at flyhalf, pairing him with Antoine Dupont in a halfback combination that has flourished in recent matches.

While Jalibert was included in the matchday 23, the Bordeaux-Bègles playmaker refused the bench role and subsequently returned to his club. Galthie, while calm about the decision, suggested that Jalibert’s future with the national side now depends on the player’s willingness to commit.

“He will continue in the French team… if he wishes,” Galthie remarked, emphasizing the importance of individual resolve in the team’s framework.

Jalibert has long competed with Romain Ntamack for the coveted No. 10 jersey, but Ramos’ emergence as a reliable flyhalf has complicated the dynamic. Traditionally a fullback, Ramos has stepped into the pivot role with aplomb, starting in key fixtures during the 2024 Six Nations and continuing to impress in Ntamack’s absence.

“There is mental preparation and choices on the rugby part,” Galthie said. “To build a team, what matters is the determination of the moment. The individual strength that will serve the collective.”
