Bob Skinstad has launched a passionate defence of Scott Robertson, who the former Springbok skipper believes will become a “great” All Blacks head coach.

Robertson, who succeeded Ian Foster after the Rugby World Cup, is preparing his All Blacks side for a tough challenge against the Springboks at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Having already led New Zealand to four wins in five Tests, the 50-year-old faces scrutiny after one loss and some criticism of the team’s attacking play.

Skinstad, speaking to The Platform, praised Robertson’s rugby philosophy and leadership, believing the Crusaders legend is the right man for the job.

“I’ve always thought that Scott would be a fantastic All Blacks coach, and I know he will be,” said Skinstad.

“I think Scott Robertson is a fantastic appointment, I’ve made no bones over the years about my love for his rugby philosophy.

“We played against each other as Colts for our countries and then had some games against each other as full internationals.

“My relationship with him has never changed since the first beer that we had as 20-year-olds.”

He highlighted Robertson’s man-management skills and his ability to elevate players both on and off the field.

However, Skinstad urged patience with Robertson’s project: “Everybody wants success yesterday, but that’s not fair pressure on Razor.

“He’s a great man-manager and a good player-manager, and the players who play in and around his coaching staff will be better players and better people. That’s good for rugby.”

He remains certain that Robertson is focused on making the All Blacks the best they can be and praised his positive impact on players.

Still, Skinstad remains fiercely competitive: “I still want us to beat him and the All Blacks, but I have the utmost respect for him.”
