Andy Farrell says he found it “hilarious” when Rassie Erasmus tried to predict Ireland’s lineup for the first Test against the Springboks in Pretoria on Saturday.

Farrell was speaking after naming a couple of surprise selections in Ireland’s starting XV for the first Test of the series at Loftus Versfeld.

The matchday-23 is slightly different from the one that Erasmus posted on Twitter last weekend in the build-up to the first week of the series, tongue-in-cheek adding Ireland’s caps and weight.

“It’s great. It’s hilarious,” Farrell said when asked about Erasmus’ antics, before pointing to a reporter and adding: “You think it’s good, and so do I.

“It’s hilarious. Why not? Why not? I don’t think anything of it.

“I think it was interesting, there were a few spelling mistakes, a few weights that were wrong.

“I thought it was great,” Farrell added with a smile.

Farrell was asked about what he expects from a Springbok side boasting 20 World Cup winners in their matchday-23, but chose to emphasise the opportunity for his team to win at a sold-out Loftus Versfeld.

“We are unbelievably fortunate to have an opportunity to come to South Africa to such a prestigious ground where a lot of our lads have played [in the URC],” Farrell said.

“They won’t have played in the kind of atmosphere where South Africans come together. That’s perfect for us.

“That’s exactly what we want. We are so fortunate. It’s about finding out about yourself, it’s about growing. It’s about getting a bit more respect for yourself, not just for yourself but hopefully for your opposition as well.

“And you can’t get to challenge or test yourself in these extreme ways unless you get the perfect opportunity.

“So it’s here, it’s a privilege to be able to be here and to see what we can do with it.”
