Duhan van der Merwe became Scotland’s record try-scorer in his 41st Test match, as Gregor Townsend’s side rounded off their Americas Tour with a win.

Van der Merwe, who made his Test debut in 2020, dotted down as Scotland held out for a 31-19 victory over Uruguay in Montevideo on Saturday, for their fourth win in a row.

It was the South African-born winger’s 28th try for Scotland, taking him past Stuart Hogg’s record, which the fullback set in 2022.

“He didn’t get as many touches, but he finished his try well,” Scotland coach Townsend said.

“We’re all delighted for him and it’s an amazing achievement in such a short space of time and now he can kick on and score more tries in the future.”

Van der Merwe was joined on the scoresheet by hooker Ewan Ashman and flank Luke Crosbie to put Scotland 19-0 ahead. However Uruguay threatened a comeback, scoring two tries to make it 19-14 at the break.

Scotland’s depth counted in the end, with hooker Patrick Harrison and Pierre Schoeman responding through second-half tries from driving mauls to seal the result.
