Rondebosch Boys High and SACS claimed the spoils in their Western Cape southern suburbs derby clashes on Saturday, while EG Jansen and Waterkloof played to an eight-try draw.

In the third southern suburbs derby day of 2024, Rondebosch flexed their muscles by beating Bishops College 31-16 at the Piley Rees field.

The two teams went into the match with contrasting form, as Rondebosch had won seven of their 12 games and had seven Western Province Craven Week representatives, while struggling Bishops had won just four games and, unusually, had no players selected for U18 provincial colours.

Bishops started the match brightly, opening up an 11-5 lead in the first 30 minutes with two penalties and a try.

Rondebosch’s maul turned into an effective weapon for the visitors, giving them two first-half tries to take a 12-11 lead into the break. This momentum was carried into the second half, as tighthead prop Matthew van der Merwe forced his way over the tryline, before flank Joshua Neill broke from a maul and ran 20m to score.

Fullback Dylan Miller showed exceptional pace after latching onto a kick over the Bishops defence, running from the halfway line to score as Rondebosch opened up a 31-11 lead, before Bishops grabbed a consolation try through wing Alex Newton.

In the other southern suburbs derby, it was a much closer affair as SACS snatched a 30-29 win against Wynberg.

SACS fullback Jack Benade impressed with a brace of tries to help his side claim their eighth win of the year.

Further north, there was a big game in the Noordvaal Cup between EG Jansen and Waterkloof, the only two unbeaten teams in the tournament.

The two schools would stay unbeaten after playing to a thrilling 32-32 draw, scoring four tries each in Boksburg.
