The Cheetahs came from a 13-point deficit to claim a bonus-point victory over DHL Western Province in rainy conditions in Cape Town on Saturday.
Tries from second-row veterans Carl Wegner and Victor Sekekete, wing Daniel Kasende and loose forward Jeandre Rudolph saw the Cheetahs claim a 26-19 victory.
It was the second game in a row where the Cheetahs had to come from behind, after their 34-34 draw with the Vodacom Bulls in Bloemfontein.
Rookie flyhalf Kyle Smith slotted a late penalty to ensure that the hosts came away with a losing bonus point.
A brave effort from an injury-hit WP side – who lost scrumhalves Imad Khan and Asad Moos before kick-off – saw the hosts streak into a 13-0 lead, with Jurie Matthee slotting two penalties and a conversion to Angelo Davids’ try.
However, the defending champions hit back with Wegner and Sekekete going over from short range to trail by just four points at the break.
The Cheetahs carried that momentum into the second half, with Kasende streaking clear to score in the first play of the half, before Rudolph sealed the bonus point.
Next up for the Cheetahs will be a home game against the Sharks, while Western Province will travel to Johannesburg to take on the Lions.
