Veterans Sam Cane and TJ Perenara will bow out of international rugby in New Zealand’s final Test of 2024 against Italy in Turin on Saturday.

All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has named both stalwarts for their farewell, with Cane starting in the No. 7 jersey and veteran scrumhalf Perenara set to feature off the bench.

Cane’s inclusion reshuffles the back row, with Wallace Sititi moving to blindside and Ardie Savea returning to the back of the scrum.

In other forward changes, loosehead prop Ethan de Groot and lock Patrick Tuipulotu return to the starting pack, while Anton Lienert-Brown replaces injured Jordie Barrett at inside centre, with David Havili added to the bench. Mark Tele’a is back on the right wing after recovering from a hand injury.

Robertson praised Italy’s growth, referencing their impressive Six Nations performances, including wins over Scotland and Wales, and a draw against France. “This Italy team has shown they can challenge the best. We expect a passionate, physical contest,” he said.

Robertson emphasised the significance of the occasion: “It’s our first Test in Turin, the last of our season, and a farewell for Sam and TJ. We’re determined to honour their contributions to the black jersey with a performance that matches the moment.”

The All Blacks boast a perfect 17-0 record against Italy, with their last meeting a dominant 96-17 victory in Lyon at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Saturday’s clash at Allianz Stadium marks the first Test between the sides in Turin.
