David Campese has slammed Rugby Australia’s decision to appoint Joe Schmidt as Wallabies head coach, calling him the “second-best Kiwi coach”.
Speaking to The Rugby Paper, the Wallabies legend expressed his discontent with Schmidt’s appointment, emphasising that Australia should not have a foreign coach at the helm.
“I don’t believe we should have a Kiwi coach,” Campese said. He questioned Schmidt’s credentials, arguing that while Schmidt may have won the Six Nations, he has not secured the ultimate prize in rugby.

“What has he actually won? He hasn’t won anything. The World Cup is the ultimate for any sports player or coach, and he hasn’t won anything.”
Campese was particularly critical of Rugby Australia’s habit of appointing foreign coaches, saying, “We always seem to get the second-best Kiwi coach, never the first-best.”
He added that Schmidt, despite his experience, “has got no idea about our culture or history. We’re mauling the ball from 22 metres out. We don’t do that, that’s not Australian rugby.”
