The Vodacom Bulls are riding high after a bonus-point victory in Wales, but Kurt-Lee Arendse expects the Herd to sharpen their discipline against the Scarlets on Friday, reports DEVIN HERMANUS.
Arendse, who scored a brace of tries in the Bulls’ 29-19 win over the Ospreys last week, has been in scintillating form, notching three tries in two Vodacom URC games this season. The Springbok speedster, set for a sabbatical with Japan’s Sagamihara Dynaboars from December to May, is making every moment count in the blue jersey.
However, the Bulls’ discipline came under scrutiny after finishing the Swansea clash with 13 men. David Kriel saw red, while Elrigh Louw and Alulutho Tshwakweni received yellow cards in the second half..
“Getting cards… we can control it much better but I wouldn’t say it changes the mood of the players,” Arendse told reporters during a Bulls conference from Cardiff on Tuesday, acknowledging the need for improvement in this area for the Scarlets clash in Llanelli.
“We can definitely learn from it and our focus is to be clinical and not give cards away [this week]. It definitely affects us on the field in terms of defending because we’re less numbers.
“It’s not always nice to finish the game with 13 or 14 men but I think that’s where senior guys take control of how to manage the game, and players buy into what those players say. And at the end of the day we get the results.”
The Bulls’ depth has been key to their success, with Arendse praising his teammates’ vision. “With the depth and quality of players we have, the guys see space very well and that’s why us as wings can do so well at the end of the day.

“Whenever I get an opportunity it’s to contribute on and off the field, and whenever I run out onto the field with the boys it’s to get a good result and play to the best of my ability.
“I enjoy every opportunity I get, and I must credit the forwards; they lay the foundation for us in the backline. If they give us the momentum we can capitalise on that.”
Currently fourth in the URC standings and unbeaten in three games, Jake White’s Bulls are determined to improve their overseas record. Arendse emphasised the team’s focused approach to touring this season.
“In the past we have done too well on tour and this time we said we want to have a good tour,” he said. “It’s not always easy but we want to make sure we get as many points as possible out of the three games.
“Always difficult playing away from home… but we want to return home with a good record.”
However, Arendse is wary of the challenge posed by their Welsh opponents on Friday. “Scarlets are playing and they’ll definitely want to prove a point. We just need to focus on what we got wrong last week and keep them out, by playing the gameplan the coaches’ want from us,” he stated.
Despite the potential hurdles, Arendse remains confident in the Bulls’ current form and depth. “We’re in a good space at the moment, with guys getting game time in the Currie Cup and there’s a lot of depth as well.”
