We all know which Springbok has scored the most Test points and which player has played the most Tests, but who averages the most points per Test?

The answer may surprise you!

Percy Montgomery holds the record for most points in the green and gold jersey (893) which came in his 102 Tests at an average of 8.75 per Test.

But that places Monty only 10th in terms of points per Test.

Eben Etzebeth holds the record for most Tests played (131), but he’s only scored 35 points in those matches at an average of 0.27 points per Test.

Jannie de Beer is the most prolific Springbok player per Test played with an average of 13.92 in his 13 Tests.

De Beer’s 181 Test points came via two tries, 33 conversions, 27 penalties and eight drop goals.

Second on the list is Gavin Johnson at an average of 12.29 in his seven Tests, while Naas Botha fills third place with his 312 Test points having come at an average of 11.14.

In terms on current players, Handre Pollard sits in ninth spot with an average of 9.65.

Comparison

A comparison to four of the sport’s greatest ever flyhalves makes for interest reading.

All Blacks superstar Dan Carter scored 1 598 Test points in his 112 Tests at an average of 14.27, while England’s Jonny Wilkinson averaged 12.96 in scoring 1 179 points in 91 Tests.

Owen Farrell scored 1 237 Test points for England in 112 Tests at an average of 11.04, while Ireland’s Johnny Sexton averaged 9.39 in scoring 1 108 points in 118 Tests.
