There are very few Springboks who are more well known, and well respected, than household name Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira.
Mtawarira featured in 117 Tests for the Springboks (the fourth most of all time), and remarkably started in almost all of them.
The powerful prop’s career effectively kick-started with an incredible performance in a victorious series against the British & Irish Lions in 2009, while he would eventually retire after producing a similarly dominant set-piece performance in the 2019 World Cup final against England.
Mtawarira was also an incredibly loyal servant to the Sharks, featuring only for that one local franchise throughout his career.
He did have a brief stint with Major League Rugby’s Old Glory DC, but this was largely in a mentorship role, with the arrival of the pandemic ultimately also cutting his stint in the US short.
Springbok Beast Mtawarira has been hugely successful ever since retiring
In many ways, Mtawarira is a prime role model for any sportspeople when it comes to ensuring he has continued to succeed away from the rugby field.
As part of his successful transition into the business world, Mtawarira is a shareholder in a major security company, has his own international wine business, sits on the Sharks’ board and is involved in various other commercial work.
He is an ambassador for a host of leading brands, and is a sought-after guest speaker.
The 38-year-old is also involved in a number of philanthropic endeavours, having established The Beast Foundation, a community organisation that empowers young people through sports training, education, and skills development.
As part of the foundation’s work, he has overseen numerous coaching boot camps with young rugby players.
In 2022, Mtawarira was also appointed by UNICEF as a regional ambassador for eastern and southern Africa, and he has undertaken numerous outreach ventures in this role.
As a passionate philanthropist, Mtawarira just recently spent time with Prince William, who arrived in South Africa in November for a visit that focused on his Earthshot environmental prize and youth outreach.
Global superstar
As a result of his global status and various business and commercial roles, Mtawarira is a true globetrotter, regularly sharing his travels on social media – ranging from major US sports games to the Monaco Grand Prix to the glamorous Roc Nation brunch.
In another example of how his brand remains as relevant as ever, he was recently named as a partner with ISUZU Motors South Africa.
“I’ve always prided myself on pushing boundaries and going the extra mile, both on the field and in my endeavours,” Mtawarira explained. “That’s why I resonate so much with ISUZU – it’s a brand that understands what it means to be tough, dependable, and always ready for the next challenge.”
The former World Cup winner is very active on social media, and you can follow him on Instagram here to see everything he is getting up to since retiring.
