In an interesting announcement made this week, All Blacks superstar Mark Tele’a confirmed that he will play his club rugby in Japan from next year.

What makes this relevant to South Africa and the Springboks is his connection with the country as he has a South African father.

By opting to play overseas, Tele’a has ruled himself out of All Blacks selection due to NZ Rugby’s policy that only those playing in New Zealand can represent the national team, and it can’t be forgotten that there is a new eligibility ruling that allows players to switch nationality within three years.

The superstar made his last appearance for the All Blacks on 23 November 2024, so he would qualify to play for the Springboks on 23 November 2027.

Would the All Blacks player really consider the Springboks?

Interestingly, Tele’a has stated that he would consider playing for the Springboks – or even Samoa, through his mother’s heritage – if the offer was on the table.

“If they asked me and the moment was right, yeah [I would]. If Samoa approached me, [I’d say the same]. But right now, my mind is set where I am right now,” Tele’a stated on a podcast interview.

Yet, there really is every likelihood that Tele’a will most likely return to New Zealand, and to try put himself back in All Blacks contention ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
