Rassie Erasmus has revolutionised Springbok rugby since his return to South Africa in 2018, and he will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest coaches of all time.
When the 2027 World Cup rolls around, Erasmus will have been at the helm of the Springboks for nearly a decade, but it’s likely that he will then hand over the reins after overseeing a third RWC campaign.
Erasmus has always made it clear how much he loves the job, and that he wouldn’t coach any other international team, but it is a role that comes with tons of pressure to be in the Springbok hot seat.
It is highly probable that he will look to hand over the head coach reins after the next World Cup, and so Springboks fans may well need to truly enjoy the next three seasons when he is guaranteed to be at the helm of the national team.
Towards the end of last year, Erasmus explained why he didn’t think it would be possible to coach another international side.
“If you don’t know the culture of a team and their heartbeat, you don’t understand why they are playing and how their fans are,” he told BBC Sport.
“I did consider it once and I loved my time at Munster as it was very Bloemfontein-like. But I wouldn’t know what makes another country tick.”
Rassie Erasmus has named a slightly rejigged Springbok coaching team
Erasmus unveiled his latest management team on Thursday, with the three new additions to the coaching and management groups being Felix Jones – who was a member of the team’s triumphant 2019 and 2023 RWC campaigns – as well as Lance Lemmetjies, who will join the medical team as one of two physiotherapists from June, and Robyn Moore, as the team dietician from 1 April.
The Springbok coaches will host their first in-person planning block for the year from Friday 7 March followed by an alignment camp with 56 players in the Mother City from Monday 10 March, which will be followed by two virtual alignment camps with the Japanese and European-based players and a handful of talented and injured domestic players on Wednesday 27 March.
