Today, Thursday 24 April 2025, marks 2000 days of Springbok glory, since we lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama, Japan, back in 2019. So, not only auspicious as the day VAT increases were overturned in South Africa. Let’s go!
Nevertheless, anyone who follows Springbok fan Jared Wright on X will have been following the ‘World Champion count’ every single day. So, Jared, we salute you for keeping score …
2000 DAYS OF SPRINGBOK GLORY
Isn’t it incredible to think it’s been 2000 days of Springbok glory, since that unforgettable moment in Yokohama in November 2019? 2000 days and counting that the men in green and gold have stood at the pinnacle of international rugby excellence.
When captain Siya Kolisi lifted the Webb Ellis Cup, who could have predicted the remarkable journey that would follow. Under the astute guidance of Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber, the ‘boks maintained their status, blending tactical brilliance with indomitable spirit and never-say-die toughness.
WHAT ABOUT 3000 DAYS?
The next Rugby World Cup will culminate on Sunday 13 November 2027. That’s a guaranteed 933 more days for our World Championship run. However, if we want to reach 3000 days and beyond as the world’s best, we will have to become the first-ever team to ‘threepeat,’ as in win three back-to-back Rugby World Cups.
However, for the players who have already worn the iconic jersey during this golden era, will they make the next milestone? Veterans like Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth and Handre Pollard have already become national icons. But do they have the fitness, dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering belief to make it to 2027?
TREASURE CHEST OF NEW TALENT
Thankfully, coach Rassie looks to already be nurturing the next dynasty of Springbok champions for 2027 and beyond. The likes of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Aphelele Fassi and more, are being prepared for the rigours of a title defence.
In a nation forever navigating complex social divisions, the World Champion Springboks continue to serve as a powerful unifying force. The team’s journey mirrors South Africa’s troubled-yet-remarkable narrative. Never say die, never give up. But, for now, let’s take a moment to savour 2000 days of excellence. We’ve earned it!
