The Sharks and Stormers have taken most of the brunt regarding the latest frenzy of Springbok injuries.

In some instances, both have had around half of their starters sidelined.

John Plumtree’s side has been given a substantial boost ahead of their clash against the Lions tomorrow as World Cup winners Siya Kolisi and Ox Nche return to the starting fifteen.

After twelve United Rugby Championship (URC) games, the Durban outfit find themselves in fourth position, idling around playoff contention, whilst the Lions lie in ninth. A win would elevate them to sixth, surpassing Cardiff and Edinburgh.

SA Impact

URC chief Martin Anayi has praised the impact of South African clubs, such as the Sharks and Lions, in the league.

“South African teams [have] been tremendously successful in terms of performance and attendance, as well as financially and commercially,” said Anayi.

“Pretty much anybody you speak to in the league will say they have raised the standard of the competition on and off the field and they will continue to do that.”

“It’s a game changer. It’s millions, more than half our revenue comes from South Africa via television and sponsorship.

“They are also providing more value to EPCR, via Investec’s sponsorship of the Champions Cup. It is a huge part of the rugby economy for Europe.”
