Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is the heart and soul of South African rugby, but at 33, questions are mounting about how much longer he can hold his place in Rassie Erasmus’ starting fifteen, especially with the wave of talent challenging for the number six jersey.

The double World Cup winner is aware of the competition he faces, saying, “to be honest, I’m not thinking about the captaincy. I just want to make the team,

“The most important thing for me is to have the chance to play for the Springboks. Whether I’m captain or not is not in my control. I just want to play well enough to be part of the team, and to hopefully make it to the 2027 World Cup.”

Krige speaks on Kolisi

Former skipper Corne Krige believes Kolisi is still the man to be leading the springboks, saying, “His presence on the team and the support he enjoys across the country makes an incredible difference,

“As long as he plays like he is now and doesn’t get injured, I think he can even remain captain until the next World Cup,

“The idea of just one guy leading the team hasn’t been a reality for years. However, in my opinion, Siya is the man for at least the next two years.”

Words from Jean de Villiers

Paarl-native Jean de Villiers is another Springbok to have donned the captaincy role, and is another believer in Kolisi:

“The big thing is always that the captain has to justify his place in the team, which Siya is still doing,” said de Villiers.

“I don’t think you need to announce a captain until then.”
