As the Springboks have begun to build towards the 2025 Test season, one concern for coach Rassie Erasmus has been the injury toll that has ripped through South Africa’s domestic franchises.
Only Steven Kitshoff (retired), Elrigh Louw and Trevor Nyakane have been ruled out of selection contention as it stands for the Springboks, though, with the international season getting underway for South Africa in June.
And as the URC resumes this weekend after a brief break for most team, there has now also been a timely injury update from the Stormers.
Damian Willemse is expected to be available for selection again after missing the last few months of action due to a groin injury, and his return will be a major boost for the Stormers and the Springboks, in due course.
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who has been injury prone, is now fully recovered from knee and shoulder injuries, and South African rugby fans will be thrilled to see him back in action.
In one more dose of good news, Manie Libbok has also overcome a concussion concern, and it will be interesting to see who is now deployed at flyhalf for the Stormers.
Stormers welcome boost of returning Springboks
Interestingly, there have been whispers in the Cape that Feinberg-Mngomezulu is now being viewed primarily as a flyhalf rather than as a utility back.
“He’s going to have that opportunity now. He’s set his sights on that position (flyhalf),” Stormers assistant coach Dawie Snyman said.
“Previously, we almost had to manoeuvre him around with Manie also playing in that position. He’s obviously showed what he can do at flyhalf and he played brilliantly there for the Springboks. So, hopefully, he can get a few games for us in that position.”
The Stormers return to action this Saturday when they play away against Llanelli Scarlets (17:00 kick off time).
