Being a Springbok captain isn’t easy. Siya Kolisi has proved otherwise, leading South Africa to successive World Cups.

As competition for starting positions heightens and Kolisi’s age extends, there’s been much debate, until now, on who will take the reins in 2025. Rassie Erasmus believes the 33-year-old is still the man for the job.

“Our feeling is if a guy is 34, 35, 36, injury-free and the fittest he can be, as long as he is number one in his position, he will stay captain,” he explained.

“Obviously, there are some other options. Eben Etzebeth, Bongi Mbonambi and Pieter-Steph du Toit have been captains. If Siya is fit, healthy and playing well, then I don’t think there will be a change this year.”

New year, same player

The newly converted number 8 boasts versatility for Erasmus’ selection conundrum, having seamlessly transitioned to the position under Sharks coach John Plumtree.

Springboks have arguably (is it even a question?) the best squad depth in world rugby, meaning the competition for spots is fierce. Kolisi is aware of challenge he faces, saying, “to be honest, I’m not thinking about the captaincy. I just want to make the team,

“The most important thing for me is to have the chance to play for the Springboks. Whether I’m captain or not is not in my control. I just want to play well enough to be part of the team, and to hopefully make it to the 2027 World Cup.”

Should the Springboks keep Kolisi?
