Siya Kolisi has led the Springboks for sixty-one of his ninety-two caps.
The Gqeberha native, once seen as irreplaceable in the No. 6 jersey, guided South Africa to back-to-back World Cups alongside teammates Eben Etzebeth and Pieter Steph du-Toit – the trio have run rampant in the last decade and will all be in the twilight of their careers when the 2027 World Cup kicks-off.
At the ripe age of thirty-three, Kolisi’s starting role could soon come under siege as the likes of Elrigh Louw, who recently suffered a horrific leg injury, burst onto the scene – the newly converted Sharks No. 8 isn’t getting any younger.
Kolisi on the Springboks
Kolisi is fully aware of the competition he faces, from du Toit to Louw, saying, “to be honest, I’m not thinking about the captaincy. I just want to make the team,
“The most important thing for me is to have the chance to play for the Springboks. Whether I’m captain or not is not in my control. I just want to play well enough to be part of the team, and to hopefully make it to the 2027 World Cup.”
Krige wants Kolisi to stay
Springbok legend Corne Krige believes Kolisi is still the man Rassie Erasmus should call upon:
“His presence on the team and the support he enjoys across the country makes an incredible difference,” said Krige.
“As long as he plays like he is now and doesn’t get injured, I think he can even remain captain until the next World Cup.
“The idea of just one guy leading the team hasn’t been a reality for years. However, in my opinion, Siya is the man for at least the next two years.”
Should Kolisi still be Springbok captain?
