Former Springboks head coach Nick Mallett says it will be tough for Siya Kolisi to play in another Rugby World Cup.

The 33-year-old flanker became only the second captain to lead his team to back-to-back World Cup triumphs. He did so in 2019 and again in 2023, making him the most successful Springbok captain in history.

Kolisisi will be 36 by the time the next World Cup kicks off but Mallett says it would be tough for the Sharks star to make the team.

“He’s playing great rugby but three more years at that level… I would love to have him as a captain at the next World Cup but it’s going to be really tough,” Mallett said in the Boks Office podcast

Another player who is doubtful for the 2027 global showpiece is Willie Le Roux. The Boks veteran will be 38 in two years’ time and might not be an option for Rassie Erasmus.

“He might even be a back three consultant,” Mallett said on Le Roux as per Planet Rugby. “What Rassie does is he keeps [Duane] Vermeulen, keeps Willie to organise the back three because [Aphelele] Fassi’s still got a bit of learning to do, although he’s playing magnificent rugby at the moment.”

It remains to be seen if Siya Kolisi will captain his side in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
