The Springboks’ first match of the year against the Barbarians- or BaaBaas- at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium has been marred by criticism from rugby fans over its “exorbitant” ticket prices.
The South African and British-based invitational rugby unions will face off on Saturday, 28 June. Tickets cost between R250 and R3500.
The Boks will play other countries in 2025, including test matches against Italy, Georgia, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Ireland, and Wales.
RUGBY FANS BEMOAN SPRINGBOKS VS BARBARIANS TICKET PRICES
On social media, South African rugby fans have shared their dissatisfaction at having to fork out a small fortune to watch the Springboks play the Barbarians next month.
The tickets are being sold via Ticketmaster. The cheapest seat costs R250, and the most expensive is priced at over R3 000.
However, the limited low-cost tickets – allocated by an electronic system – were sold out before tickets officially opened on Tuesday, 6 May. This was due to the Stormers – whose home stadium is the DHL Stadium – giving their season ticket holders early access a week earlier.
TikToker @nazeer_hoosen said in a video clip: “I’m sorry for whoever set these prices. And it’s a friendly match, not even a normal test match. If it wasn’t in Cape Town, these prices wouldn’t be it. It would be much lower.
@nazeer_hoosen I wonder if it will be sold out with these prices 😳 #springboksrugby #springboks #sarugby #rugbyunion ♬ original sound – Nazeer Hoosen
In the comments section, others agreed.
“We can’t afford to see our own national team.”
“Stronger together, but middle-class citizens can’t afford a decent ticket”.
“DHL Stadium is never bearing the greedy allegations.”
“Rugby is a sport for VIP people and landowners!”
“Springboks pretend to stand for unity and doing it for South Africa, but profits are all that matter to them. The prices are ridiculous and they know we cannot afford those tickets”.
WHY ARE DHL STADIUM PRICES SO HIGH?
It’s not the first time Springbok fans have complained about the price of test match tickets at the DHL Stadium.
But why are they so expensive?
According to stadium management, this is because of the venues…
- Modern, world-class features
- Limited availability and high demand
- Cape Town is being hailed as a top tourist destination
DO YOU THINK THAT THE SPRINGBOKS VS BARBARIANS TICKETS ARE OVERPRICED?
