Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard has been with English club Leicester Tigers since 2022, having previously enjoyed time with French club Montpellier and Japan’s Red Hurricanes after he left the Bulls.

However, the 30-year-old’s Leicester contract is now nearing its end, and even Pollard himself admits he is not sure of the next step amid speculation linking him to a move to Japan.

Reports suggest the double World Cup winner could join Suntory Sungoliath, potentially reuniting with national teammate Cheslin Kolbe.

“I have no idea,” Pollard told BBC Radio Leicester when asked about his next step. “I’m just happy being at Leicester and will enjoy every minute I have here,” he added.

Handre Pollard has seen his role change at the Springboks

At a time when the Springboks have been looking to expand depth and also manage the game-time of their more experienced players, Pollard has played a mentorship role at times this season as someone like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu begins to break through on the senior stage.

It also shouldn’t be forgotten that Pollard is still only 30-year-old, but he admitted earlier this week that he was happy to take on a different role.

“I’m not that old, hey, but it’s fun,” Pollard said. “The guys are exciting, and they are eager to learn and that’s nice and when we were young, guys also helped us.

“The good thing is that there’s healthy competition in the group, which is nice, but we all have the same goal, which is bigger than the individual.

“If we can help the young guys with one or two things, that’s great because we’re also learning a lot from them as well.

“You always need to try and develop and stay fresh, and the new guys bring that. It’s enjoyable, competitive, but it’s really good.”
