After overseeing a period of remarkable success with the Springboks, it is hoped that Rassie Erasmus could still lead the Springboks to a hat-trick of World Cup titles in 2027.
Erasmus remains under contract until after that global showpiece, but it remains to be seen whether he could then step aside after what would be nearly a decade at the helm of the national side.
In many ways, Erasmus could understandably be seen as virtually irreplaceable, but there are also increasing signs to suggest that the Springboks will be spoilt for choice if they have to consider a successor.
From within the current system, long-serving assistant Mzwandile Stick is a prime candidate after gaining invaluable experience and establishing himself as a highly astute and popular coach.
Then there is also Johann van Graan, who has just led Bath to the Challenge Cup trophy. The former Springbok assistant coach has taken English side Bath to new heights, transforming a club that hit rock bottom just two seasons ago, and taking them to the top of the English Premiership.
Franco Smith, who has also done wonders with the Glasgow Warriors, is another experienced candidate who could make a very strong play for the Springbok job if he continues to enjoy such success overseas.
Then there are others such as former coach Jacques Nienaber, who could be interested in a return to South Africa after his stint with Leinster, while Felix Jones is someone who continues to make a name for himself.
All in all, when the Springboks eventually have to look beyond Erasmus, SA Rugby should be able to rest easy in the knowledge that not all is lost.
