Scott Robertson expects “tough moments” for the All Blacks against the Springboks on Saturday, despite an impressive run of form for New Zealand at Ellis Park.
The Kiwis face the world champions this week in the first of two clashes in the Republic between the old foes in the 2024 Rugby Championship, in what will be Robertson’s first Test as New Zealand head coach against the Boks,
Robertson, who succeeded Ian Foster after the Rugby World Cup, is preparing his All Blacks side for a tough challenge on the Highveld.
The Kiwis have an impressive record at Ellis Park over the last 20 years, with three wins (2013, 2015 and 2022) and only two defeats (2004 and 2014). But, speaking to the media on Thursday in Johannesburg, Robertson insists performance comes first.
“What matters on Saturday is our performance because that will look after the record,” Robertson was quoted by News24. “It’s one of the more iconic fields… you want as many players who have experienced it before.

“It’s going to help in the times of need and there are going to be some tough moments there, as we know.
“Their composure and tone of voice and the action that’s required, they’ll deliver it themselves and they know what it takes.”
Former skipper Sam Cane returns to the All Blacks starting XV for the first time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final. Cane, who is on 96 caps, was praised by Robertson for his leadership.
“He’s been incredible off the field for us,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for him to be incredible on the field with all of that experience.”
Robertson, meanwhile, wasn’t surprised by two-time World Cup winner Eben Etzebeth’s late inclusion to the Boks’ matchday 23, despite an injury scare earlier in the week.
“He’s had a medical check that’s gone better than expected… you have to take every opportunity for him to be on the field.”
