The All Blacks are set to unleash TJ Perenara on the Springboks in the 2024 Rugby Championship with Scott Robertson saying the injured scrumhalf is “tracking well”.

The Boks are to face the New Zealanders at Ellis Park on Saturday, 31 August and their second encounter scheduled for the following week in Cape Town on 7 September.

Robertson reassured that the 32-year-old Perenara, who missed the 2023 season, is determined to recover ahead of schedule. The All Blacks face Argentina in their first Rugby Championship Test in Wellington on 10 August.

“He diagnoses himself, old TJ,” Robertson was quoted by Stuff.co.nz. “Anything the doc says, he [Perenara] minuses two or three [weeks] off it. And, look, he’s great.

“He’s tracking incredibly well, but he will be available, yes we believe, to be named.”

During recent Tests, the head coach used four halfbacks: Perenara, Cortez Ratima, Noah Hotham, and Finlay Christie. With three halfbacks expected in the 36-man squad for the Championship, Perenara’s return may push Hotham back to NPC duties with Tasman.

Ratima, who failed an HIA (head injury assessment) during the Fiji match, is expected to rejoin the squad for the upcoming tournament.
