The 2024 Rugby Championship will reportedly see the introduction of trial rules that if approved, promises to make for more dynamic and exciting scrumhalf play.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, these changes could significantly alter game dynamics and provide tactical advantages, particularly for nimble Springbok scrumhalves such as Grant Williams and Morne van den Berg.

One key proposal is redefining the scrum tunnel as the new touchline for scrumhalves, offering more space and reducing defensive pressure at the base of the scrum.

Additionally, World Rugby’s decision-makers are set to approve a stopwatch for lineouts and scrums, limiting teams to 30 seconds to restart play. This aims to enhance game flow and reduce downtime.

A 20-minute red card is also under consideration. This rule, claim insiders, would allow a player penalised with a red card to be replaced after 20 minutes, except for severe foul play, which would still result in a traditional red card.
