Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is on the New Zealand’s radar, as John Kirwan says the All Blacks need to rush the Test rookie during the clash with the Springboks at Ellis Park on Saturday.
There has been plenty of debate over who should don the Springbok No 10 jersey, when the world champions resume their Rugby Championship campaign with a clash against the All Blacks in Johannesburg.
Pollard was the starting flyhalf when the Boks beat New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup final in Paris, slotting four first-half penalties to help South Africa win 12-11.
However, Feinberg-Mngomezulu has started in the opening Rugby Championship bonus-point wins against the Wallabies in Brisbane and Perth.
The 22-year-old has produced some eyecatching performances in his breakthrough season, which have not gone unnoticed in New Zealand, with Jeff Wilson heaping the praise on the Stormers star during the latest episode of The Breakdown.
“They’ve found a playmaker, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who’s a little bit different,” Wilson said.
“You watch the way that he plays the game, in those two Test matches against Australia. Now, we are used to seeing Handre Pollard at 10. All of a sudden, they’ve got this young kid.
“I started reading up and looking at some footage, this guy’s a potential superstar! There’s nothing he can’t do in terms of his creativity, execution, vision and his goalkicking. They’re dangerous.”
However, responding to Wilson, former All Blacks wing John Kirwan noted that the Wallabies gave Feinberg-Mngomezulu too much time and space on the ball.
“Yeah, but how much time did he have there? The Australians, in the second half of that second Test, they just didn’t have any linespeed,” Kirwan said.
“When you talk about mindset and what we need to bring, you need to put this kid under incredible pressure.”
