The Cheetahs beat all the other unions to secure the signature of rising star Ntokozo Makhaza, who dominated the Varsity Cup.

This news – confirmed by the union on Thursday via a press statement – comes just three days after Makhaza spectacularly led the UCT Ikey Tigers to the Varsity Cup title against their bitter rivals Maties.

The Cheetahs’ new marquee signing, who was named both the 2025 Varsity Cup Player of the Year and Backline Player of the Year, played a pivotal role in the Ikey Tigers’ emphatic 44-21 victory over Maties in the Varsity Cup final – on Maties’ home turf, no less. He contributed a remarkable 32 points in the final, bringing his season tally to 155.

It marks the second consecutive year that Makhaza was Varsity Cup Player of the Year and his third consecutive appearance in the Varsity Cup final.

“The Toyota Cheetahs are thrilled to announce the signing of one of South Africa’s most exciting young backline talents, Ntokozo Makhaza. The 23-year-old wing will join the side ahead of the 2025 Currie Cup season.

Being born in Bethlehem in the Free State, Ntokozo Makhaza’s move to the Toyota Cheetahs is something of a homecoming, and the Toyota Cheetahs look forward to welcoming Ntokozo to Bloemfontein.

DO YOU THINK MAKHAZA WILL FLOURISH AT THE CHEETAHS?
