The Springboks may be the No 1 team in the world, but South Africa’s domestic sides have endured some mixed results when it comes to the competitions in the northern hemisphere that they’re now involved in, particularly the Champions Cup.

Although there has been success in the URC, the Champions Cup has proved to be a difficult prospect, presenting travel and game management challenges that have not been easy to overcome.

On Sunday, this season’s last South African hope, the Sharks, were knocked out of the Champions Cup after suffering a humiliating 66-12 defeat against the Bordeaux-Begles.

Following on from the Bulls and Stormers’ failure to qualify for the Round of 16, this will represent the first time that there will not be a South African that managed to progress to the playoff stage of the tournament, which will certainly lead to some questions and concerns.

On Saturday the Stormers had gone down 31-22 against Racing 92 to exit the Champions Cup race, while the Bulls came into their game against Stade Francais already out of playoffs contention, but at least did manage to claim a 48-7 victory that ended a four-match losing run.
