Impi Visser has hinted that the Blitzboks are yet to hit their stride, despite cruising to a 36-7 triumph over Ireland on day one of the Cape Town Sevens on Saturday.

Visser, Quewin Nortje, David Brits and Mfundo Ndhlovu were on on the scoresheet to guide the Blitzboks to a six-try thrashing over the Irish, with Ricardo Duarttee, better known as Tricky Ricky, knocking over three of the six conversion attempts.

But speaking to the media after the game, Visser had more praise for South Africa’s remarkable defensive shift, as opposed to their attacking prowess.

“I think that’s testament to our system that if implemented correctly, we can stop teams from gaining momentum and scoring tries,” the veteran said.

“I don’t think it was a 100% perfect, but if we can work that hard for each other, just to make sure that a team doesn’t score, those small moments alter the game and if we can turn more of those moments into our favour then we’ll be successful this weekend.”

Commenting on his two-try contribution, the Blitzboks ace said it came as a big surprise because he rarely plants the ball over the whitewash.

“Surprise for me, I’m not a regular try scorer, but happy to get a few. It just shows that the ball’s doing the work and usually when there forwards are scoring tries, the backline players are doing their job beating defenders,” he concluded.
